Hello again, dear friends. Grace knows it's Summer, but were you ready for Spring!? Well, the men were O-U-T. Goodness! Have you seen what's been hiding under those big, bulky, winter coats? Well, Miss Spring brought them out! Off came the coats, gloves, sweaters, and Devil only knows what else, and out came-the men!
Darlings, Grace was driving by HOWARD UNIVERSITY one hot, sunny day and nearly had an accident! She had never, at any one time or place, seen such a gorgeous collection of Black men. She nearly ran into the back of a Metrobus! By all means, give Georgia Avenue a workout dears but please keep your seat belts fastened!
Grace hears that WALTER JOHNSON has resigned from The PINOCHLE CLUB. However, the club refused to accept his resignation because, as Grace was informed, it was hastily written on "toilet" paper. (Grace sincerely hopes it wasn't "personalized.") They also felt this obviously dramatic act was not an original performance, since it had been tried before by another club member.
Dears, you would never believe some of the amazing things people tell Grace. Why, just the other day, someone was trying to make Grace believe that members of The BEST OF WASHINGTON, and its subsidiary organization, were banned, allegedly, by presidential decree, from attending The ASSOCIATES' recent TEA DANCE because The Associates chose to withdraw from competition in the Best Of Washington's ALICE AWARDS. . . And speaking of highly publicized affairs, Grace also hears that the delay in starting the dinner and show at one such affair recently was because the organization had not settled its final bill with the hotel and had to hastily borrow $8,500.00 from a Capitol Hill bar owner. The festivities were delayed further while a messenger was sent to get the money!
Several parties worth mentioning this issue . . .JUICY gave a fantastic combination birthday, cocktail, and house-warming party at his new condo. The apartment is all very Ming Dynasty and everybody looked great in the oriental atmosphere. . .JOHN "TICKETRON" ROBERTSON had the nerve to celebrate another birthday. The party was held at LA ZAMBRA, with a special performance by male dancers in G-strings and jock straps. John's a jewel and Grace wishes him the best. . .The Associates' Tea Dance in Columbia, Maryland was quite nice. A portion of the proceeds went to the United Negro College Fund and nearly two-hundred people came out.
THURLOW EVANS TIBBS' reception to mark the opening of the exhibition "Six Washington Masters" at the Evans-Tibbs Gallery was also a very fine affair. A portion of the Evans-Tibbs Collection traveled during the months of March and April. One of the stops was Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia. .
CHILDREN'S HOUR was one big ball as usual. The theme this year was "The Black Hole at the End of the Universe," and every outer and inner space being was in THE CLUBHOUSE. The invitation was outstanding also. . .STEVE LYNCH'S birthday brunch at his Capitol Hill home was another one of those affairs to have been invited to.
Well, it seems that now we have to look out for violence inside the bars as well as outside. NORMAN, an employee of The BRASS RAIL, was shot three times after telling a patron that he could not continue smoking "reefer" inside the bar. Luckily, Norman survived. And at the NOB HILL, ORIE had a fight with SHELTON. When the ashtrays stopped flying, five persons were hurt. Police cars and ambulances were everywhere! In spite of a concussion, lacerations of the face and neck and internal bleeding, La Shelton assured Grace she was still alive, and did not die in the ambulance as had been rumored.
As reported last time BACHELOR'S MILL remains one of the hottest clubs on the weekends. Not only have they grabbed some of La Zambra's crowd, but now they've got one of their bartenders, VALERIE SHAW. Valerie was a long-time associate of La Z. Wonder why the change???
Well dears, as we bring this little chat to a close, Grace would again like to say that she always tries to be a positive, productive, and progressive girl--what she calls a "3-P's girl." She is always happy to help the children by word or deed. We all should try to be a bit more considerate.
