Art or Advertising?
When I stumbled across this outdoor art exhibit one afternoon during a walk down Paseo de la Reforma I was initially impressed.

El dolor de cabeza is just the elegant Spanish way of saying "headache" and pharmaceutical giant Bayer was celebrating 120 years of selling aspirin in Mexico with an art show.

Each "canvas" is a replica of a Bayer aspirin, a very big Bayer aspirin, made of fiberglass.

Each is about three feet across and sits on a pedestal that allows them to be turned to see the other side of the pill.

A dozen Mexican artists were commissioned by Bayer which resulted in 24 canvases. And I'm going to assume big, rich, Bayer paid the artists well.

Some of the art is quite beautiful and imaginative but because the Bayer logo is always there, the advertising aspect is there, too.

And then there's the artist's description of their work, translated from the Spanish, a couple of them go just a bit overboard praising aspirin.

No secret the artistic mind is a bit different from everyone else's, and I always like to hear an artist explain their work because folks will be all over the place with their own interpretations.

But the bottom line is, this is all about Bayer selling their product.
Does that diminish the work?

If the Bayer logo wasn't present and these same pieces were hanging in a gallery would they be viewed differently?

"A woman gazes at us as she displays a sign of love and confidence to invite us to share her well-being. A moment later, she walks away dancing with the sunset."

"The work reflects the vision of the artist in elements used as symbols and signs. A great eye that observes the viewer causes contact immediately due to its dimensions and visual power, emulating the old technique of engraving, which leads us to place the celebration of its 120 years of origin. I want to reflect the state of well-being we feel when taking aspirin."

Del dolor al alivio (From pain to relief)
By Fernando Osorno Cruz — Acrylic on fiberglass

When I first saw this I concocted a narrative that was all wrong. I saw the guy at the top enjoying a scene, then someone gives him some bad drugs which gives him a headache which, I assume, will be cured with aspirin. On the opposite side, the scene repeats with a female. But, as the artist explains, that's not what's going on at all.

"It raises a story where the characters go from the discomfort of the pain that prevents them from concentrating and coexisting with the pleasure of the relief that allows them to continue with their plans in a friendlier and better environment. The story is read from the bottom up and in it I have expressed, with great passion and dedication through forms and colors, my vision of the possibility of a world without pain."

These two were absolutely beautiful, with colors that just jumped out.

"His wisdom is the truce between pain and relief. That truce is represented by aspirin, honoring both parts of it in his body, since without pain there is no relief.

By Radharani Torres — Acrylic

This one I have no idea what she's talking about, even after her explanation, weaving in Carl Jung's theories, and whatever "delselbst" is.

"The body has its own language. Jung speaks delselbst which is the archetype of the transcendence of all opposites, every part of the personality of man represented in an equitable way. When the body suffers, parts that form unselbst are blocked. The body is a symptom of what the soul experiences. Selbst as the center and unity of the psyche that governs an individual. A full individual."

This was impressive, not just for the overall concept, but also for how well it was executed. From the smallest to the largest, those are individual photos cut and painstakingly applied to the canvas. And my off-center shot of the opposite side perfectly reflects her concept.

"On this side of the aspirin represents a spiral with circular photographic portraits, which start from the center, from lesser to greater, taking an aspirin for your well-being. The use of the spiral also pretends to show a symbolic meaning as the vital force, the growth and positivity"

"On the Bayer side of the aspirin is photography, with acrylic, representing a version, in appearance, of the scientific formulas which seek with the analysis of their schemes, the solution of the diseases of man. The medicine is made by the human, to the human, and is shown on the same level, in a conceptual map of interrelationships, a universe of resources of science to preserve life."

Aspirina Huichol
By Tania Lara — Mixed Technique Colored Beads and Threads

I'm not so crazy about the design of this piece. Reminds me of an old fashioned quilt or needlework but, again I was attracted to the high level of craftsmanship of the artist. If you enlarge the photo you will see the detail and how each bead was individually placed. An amazing piece to see in person.

"My inspiration in creating this piece was based on the different festivities in Mexico, thinking that the commemoration of the 120 years of aspirin will be one more to celebrate in the country.

On the one hand, there are a series of elements of nature, very colorful and with a lot of movement, generated organically and integrated to the letters of the word aspirin, and on the opposite side take Mexican elements and traditions such as inns, dances and Day of the dead, in addition to toys and national handicrafts, as part of the celebration."

Quisque ornare risus quis ligula. Phasellus tristique purus a augue condimentum LiberaciĆ³n (Liberation)
By Gerardo Vaca — Mixed Technique and Acrylic paint

This was the most stunning piece of them all. Absolutely gorgeous. Enlarge this shot and look at the details, the textures and the beautiful colors in that Afro-like hair. I don't care if it is on a big aspirin. This is art.

"For me, the face is the faithful reflection of the inner map of people, because in it are marked the experiences and emotions. My work presents a mysterious woman, where her hair is transformed into beautiful flowers, symbolizing feelings and emotions such as joy, harmony, tranquility and happiness.

In the head of the woman you can see some screws that allude to pain and discomfort, and in turn are surrounded by flowers whose centers have aspirins. My idea is to make a symbolic interpretation of aspirin, that is, how it can help to transform discomfort and pain into relief, and the reason why I include butterflies around to emulate the transmutation and release.

I think our thoughts can shelter us from the emotions more beautiful, and even the most terrible, and the reason why I play with distinctive metaphorical elements of life experiences."
